Last week I took part in a generative design workshop at LCC.

We each bought a lottery ticket, then used our numbers when sticking zillions of 30mm squares onto 210mm squares following a combination of set and made up rules. Symmetrical, diagonal, progression, random, space, and collaboration. The 2nd pic is all my ones laid together and the 3rd pic is everybody in the class’s taped together in sections of rule.

The attraction for me is the idea of generating imagery without exerting (much) control or making conscious decisions while you create. You basically make up a recipe with blank spaces for all the ingredients, then follow the recipe for whatever ingredients, and maybe you’ll make something icky but maybe you’ll make something yummmmm.

The homework shaped half of the project / workshop is on now and finishes in May….
